SENIOR RECREATION!
NOTHING LIKE GETTING OUR BODIES AND MINDS MOVING TO CELEBRATE THIS ENERGETIC SEASON!
Residing in an independent living community is basically having your own condo, but with added bonuses, like having social fun at your fingertips whenever you choose!  Our fun-loving staff have senior recreation programs to keep residents hopping and healthy for anyone ready to participate!
WHY ARE SENIOR RECREATION ACTIVITIES SO IMPORTANT?
As the body ages, it is natural for many to have a decrease in physical and social activity.  As the technological age advances and workloads increase, people seem to have less time to spend with their families, which can prove challenging for those in retirement wanting to spend more time with their loved ones.  This decrease in physical and social activity, if surrendered to, can easily lead to ill health and feelings of loneliness, which can both lead to the slippery slope of depression.  Well, we here at Coquitlam’s Earl Haig Retirement Residence encourage you to say, “NO WAY” to that slope, and we provide the means and environment in which to do so!
Our senior recreation programs at Earl Haig range from focused exercise and breathing to games, outings, and entertainment!  Senior recreation activities help to increase your circulation, strength and flexibility, your circle of friends and good conversation, all of which lead to improved physical well being and contentment.
WHAT KINDS OF SENIOR RECREATION ACTIVITIES DO YOU OFFER AT EARL HAIG?
Well, there’s something for everyone! Upbeat, low-key, and everything in between!MOVIESSit back, relax, and watch an evening flick or a weekend matinee in the recreation room with your friends and neighbours.  Movies range from black-and-white classics to modern adventures, dramas, and comedies.

MUSIC

Concerts
Enjoy various mini-concerts from visiting talented performers. Senior recreation doesn’t have to be physical. Be entertained by genres including pop standards, show tunes, country, jazz, folk, and Celtic music.  Entertainers can keep you bopping with interactive sing-alongs and musical comedy, to expressive and contemplative works.

Happy Hour and Sing-Alongs
Our personable staff members get in on the fun too!  Join the weekly staff-and-management-lead happy hours and sing-alongs for lots of laughs and community spirit!  Singing is good for the soul!  And if you’re worried about how you might sound, DON’T!  We’re all in this together!  Just come and have fun and blend your voice into the many and get your kicks!  Plus, at happy hour, you can have a glass of wine or other refreshing beverage of your choice!

Sunday Hymn Sing
For those so inclined, you can get in touch with your celebratory spiritual side at the Sunday Hymn Sing!

EXERCISE,  YOGA & WELL-BEING

Our senior recreation programs include gentle chair-based exercises and yoga stretches. You can enjoy conventional exercise twice weekly for strength building, or a very unique chair yoga; break the ice with funny joke-telling time, followed by a focus on breath capacity and joint flexibility, all ending in music and more sing-along!

You can also join the insightful staff in guided breathing meditations and visualizations for positive thinking, and attend mini-seminars related to physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

GAMES

Whatever your physical ability, there is a game day for you in our senior recreation program!  You can get moving and keep your coordination sharp with Wii Bowling (an easy to do, easy to learn virtual bowling video game based on arm movement), shuffle board, or pool.  Or you can rest your body and test your mind with regular Bingo nights (there are prizes!), card games, and the ever-in-progress jigsaw puzzle table.

SEW/KNIT/CROCHET/CRAFT SOCIAL

Feel like gabbing?  Have a project on the go?  Want to learn a new skill?  Want to show off something you’ve made or share and get ideas?  Want to just sit and have a cup of tea and a chat while being entertained watching your friends complete and share their little works of art?  Then come to the Craft Social!

OUTINGS

‘Get on out the house’ once a month with a bus trip!  Sign up and you and your friends will get picked up by our friendly Earl Haig bus driver and taken to a fun venue, usually preceded or followed by lunch in a swell restaurant or pub!  Venues can be anything from museums to a senior recreation center, craft fairs to interesting sightseeing locations or entertainment.
